Jim Gouldstone -- RESUME
2004

OBJECTIVE
To find an environment where I can apply my engineering knowledge, design skill, and aesthetic sense towards prototyping nifty devices.

EDUCATION
MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, Cambridge, MA
Bachelor of Science in Art and Design, [Architecture] June 1995
MIT School of Architecture and Planning
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, June 1996
MIT School of Engineering
Relevant Courses include: Architecture Studios, Product Design, Elements of Mechanical Design, Design for Production, Design Projects, Introduction to Design, Mechanics of Solids, Mechanical Behavior of Materials, Dynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electronics, Manufacturing, Structures, Foundations in the Visual Arts.
GPA 4.6/5.0.

EXPERIENCE
BUILDING TECHNOLOGY LABORATORY - MIT
Worked on a program which analyzes early-stage commercial building designs; the program projects heating, cooling, and lighting energy costs. The program also evaluates thermal comfort, daylighting scenarios, and natural ventilation scenarios. All results are returned as graphics; including bar graphs and 3D renderings. Work involved interface design, engineering (largely heat transfer related), server-side and client-side programming, and dynamic-image generation.
2001 - present

TAGSENSE - Cambridge, MA
Designed and prototyped a small parasitic power generator.
2002

LENK & ASSOCIATES - Watertown, MA
Created a series of interface elements corresponding to generic one-dimensional, two-dimensional and miscellaneous fields within a database table. Also created a simple markup language which ideally would allow someone familiar only with HTML to define and assemble these elements into a fairly complex interfaces for making database queries.
1997 - 2001

WEBIVORE - Watertown, MA
Designed and created educational web application. Included a search engine: sites were catalogued within a hierarchy of topics. Also included a collect engine: users could easily save images and text from sites, complete with automatic bibliographical references. Work involved graphic design, interface design, both server-side and client-side programming, database design.
1997 - 2001

XIT - Cambridge, MA
Provided graphic design. Wrote and illustrated a set of instructions for a stowable fire escape ladder.
1997

Prof. Woody Flowers, MIT
Home construction / improvement.
Summer 1996

POLYMER MORPHOLOGY LABORATORY - MIT
Polymer processing to fabricate materials with macroscopic anisotropic properties.
Summer/Fall/Winter 1995

THE TECHLER DESIGN GROUP - Boston, MA
Assisted with the remodelling of a restaurant. Work involved drawing up dimensions of existing structure, constructing perspectives, and rendering . Modelled a loft design.
Winter 1994

ACTIVITIES
Designed the T-shirt for the MIT 6.270 Autonomous Robot Competitions in 2000, 2002, 2003.
Graduate Resident Tutor at East Campus (MIT) 2000-2002
I play many word and puzzle games, and enjoy writing programs to play them for me.
Avid reader and artist.
Vice President of AIAS 1994-95 (American Institute of Architecture Students)
Earned Green Belt in MIT Tae Kwon Do Club, intermittent runner.

SKILLS
Artwork: skillful freehand drawing, product rendering, some watercolor and acrylic painting, well-versed in Photoshop.
Computers: UNIX, Windows, Mac. Experienced programmer; Java, Javascript, Scheme [a form of LISP], server-client communication, raytracing.
Machinery: CNC Milling Machine, CNC Router, Lasercutter, carpentry tools, light excavators (backhoes).

AWARDS
Wunsch Hoist and Crane Design Award 1994
Voodoo Magazine Humour Contest 1996 - Best Graphic Novella
Received three letters of congratulations from the Head of the Mechanical Engineering Dept. at MIT, having scored a 5.0 GPA in each of my last three terms. 1995-1996
